Restoring the Yarrowee: Urban Ripple Project to Rejuvenate Ballarat’s Waterways
The Yarrowee River and its tributaries are set for a major ecological revival, with the Urban Ripple Project receiving a $701,584 grant through the Victorian Government’s Green Links Program.
The project will see 39,500 indigenous plants established across 13 key sites in Ballarat, restoring 80.5 hectares and nearly 10 kilometres of waterways including the Yarrowee River, Specimen Vale Creek, Canadian Creek, and connecting tributaries.
Led by the Bunanyung Landscape Alliance, in partnership with the Yarrowee-Leigh Catchment Group, this is a deeply collaborative effort involving Traditional Owners, local Landcare groups, community volunteers, and partner organisations like Seeding Victoria and the City of Ballarat.
The Green Links Program, part of the Victorian Government’s election commitment to protect waterways so our wildlife can thrive, is about turning degraded urban waterways into healthier, greener spaces – places that communities can be proud of and that future generations can enjoy.
The Urban Ripple Project is also about respecting Country. By working closely with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, the project integrates cultural knowledge, ensures appropriate engagement, and reflects the deep significance these waterways hold.
With 66 community planting events planned, this project is a powerful example of what we can achieve when communities, Traditional Owners, agencies, and local government come together to care for Country.
The Victorian Government’s Green Links Program is delivering real outcomes for local environments – and the Urban Ripple Project is a shining example of this commitment right here in Ballarat.

“I’m proud to support a project that not only restores our precious local waterways but strengthens biodiversity, supports threatened species like the Growling Grass Frog and Platypus, and enhances the health and wellbeing of our community.”
“This project is a win for Ballarat — restoring our precious waterways, supporting local biodiversity, and bringing the community together to care for Country. I’m proud to see the Urban Ripple Project backed by the Victorian Government’s Green Links Program, and even prouder of the passionate volunteers and Traditional Owners helping to bring it to life.”
