The Andrews Labor Government is upgrading Ballarat’s sewerage system with construction to start next month on the $25 million Ballarat Sewer Build.

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle today said it was the biggest upgrade to Ballarat’s system since the original sewer was constructed almost 100 years ago.

The new infrastructure is critical to meeting the needs of the region’s growing population, which has grown by more than five times – from 22,000 to 117,000 in 2021.

Central Highlands Water will deliver the project, installing approximately 6km of sewer pipeline parallel to the current sewer, which is nearing capacity.

Constructed in three stages, the new pipeline will run from Ballarat East, through the central business district, to Ballarat South.

Once completed, the new sewer will safely collect and remove Ballarat’s wastewater for decades to come.

This essential community infrastructure project is part of Central Highlands Water’s regional investment and will cater for the growing demands of Ballarat.

Ballarat’s first sewerage system was the best in the Commonwealth when it was installed and has performed beyond expectations.
