FUNDING BOOST FOR KOALA PROTECTION IN BALLARAT

Member for Eureka Michaela Settle congratulated Ballarat Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation Inc (BWRAC) on securing more than $32,000 for their koala protection project through the Animal Welfare Package in the 2023-24 Victorian State Budget.

This funding will support BWRAC to deliver their koala protection project, which involves installing 2 kilometres of virtual fencing in the Mt Helen/Buninyong area to reduce the rate of injuries and fatalities caused by vehicle collisions.

The new virtual fencing will help mitigate road-safety dangers by alerting koalas to approaching cars, which can significantly reduce the risk of collisions. This technology works by emitting a sound and visual signal when vehicles approach – a proven strategy creating a deterrent for wildlife and preventing accidents. The installation of virtual fencing is a proven strategy for reducing wildlife fatalities and is a critical step towards safeguarding our local koala population

BWRAC was established by local wildlife carers and veterinary professionals in July 2022. In just two years, BWRAC has rescued 33 koalas, many of which have been severely injured in vehicle collisions. In addition to their rescue efforts, BWRAC is dedicated to wildlife conservation through education and advocacy.

This funding will mean they can continue this crucial work in protecting and caring for one of Australia’s most iconic animals.
