Welding students in Ballarat now have access to state-of-the-art technology and training thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle today announced more than $650,000 in funding for augmented reality technology and training for welding students at Federation University.

Ms Settle made the announcement at a graduation ceremony for students who have completed the Weld Supervisors Training program.

The technology and training are being funded under the Regional and Specialist Training Fund, part of the Labor Government’s Skills First initiative. The fund enables training to be delivered to meet industry-led demand for specific skills in regions, and specialist areas that are not being adequately met in the current training market.

By becoming an Advanced Welding Centre and using augmented welding technology, learners graduating from Federation University can contribute to the quality and quantity to welding for the manufacturing industry locally and to the west of the state.

Welders play an essential role in our economy. High quality welding is integral to medical devices that keep us healthy, the ships, aircraft and rail transport that keeps us moving, and the electronics that power our cities, towns and homes.

In supporting Victoria’s future infrastructure needs, skilled welders will play an increasingly important role in priority sectors such as defence and advanced manufacturing industries, as well as major rail and infrastructure projects.
